International diva, Gladys Knight is not calling it quits just yet but is scaling back her live performance schedule, as recent concerts have prompted concern among some fans and people working on her tour about whether the Motown legend should remain on the road.

The 82-year-old singer announced late last week that she plans to perform less as she moves into a new chapter of her life and career. Knight did not cite a health condition as the reason for the decision.

“After much soul searching, I’ve decided that I will be easing into fewer performances while focusing on transitioning into the next stage of my career and life moving forward,” Knight said in a statement posted on Instagram. “I’ll be spending more time on projects with my husband and visiting with my grandbabies and am looking forward to this new era.”

The Grammy-winning singer also thanked fans for “supporting her every step of the way” throughout a career spanning more than seven decades and “for making a little girl’s dream come true. I am immensely grateful to all of you and send my eternal love back to you.” 

Continuing, she said, “I hope to see your smiling faces out and about and on the road. God bless all of you and hope to see you soon.”

Denial she suffering from dementia

Knight’s announcement comes after TMZ reported that some people connected to her tour had become concerned by her behaviour during recent performances. At a July 25 show at the Hollywood Bowl, Knight appeared to lose her place while performing “Midnight Train to Georgia,” turning away from the audience and beginning to walk offstage, according to TMZ. 

The outlet also reported that Knight appeared exhausted during an August 18 performance at Detroit’s Fisher Theatre, where she took several breaks and seemed exhausted. Knight’s husband and manager, William McDowell, pushed back on questions of whether Knight has dementia, telling TMZ she has not been diagnosed and that they plan to have her evaluated by a doctor.

Knight is not retiring from performing altogether. She still has dates booked through November, though her statement signals that live appearances will become less frequent. The diva has won seven Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as lead vocal for the group, Gladys Knight & the Pips.
