The long-awaited biopic on Bob Marley is here and the premiere, held at Carib Cinema in Kingston, brought out Jamaica’s leading personalities.

An event of this magnitude has not been held for some time and it was well executed.

Even British Royal outcasts Harry and Meghan made a surprise appearance, with photographers all over them at the expense of our local celebs.

The majesty of royalty, I guess!

The day after the night before and people have so much things to say.

“The movie could have been better.” “ Why wasn’t so and so included ? “Could have done a better job on Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh’s contribution” .”No, it never go suh!” “His complications and darkness should have been better depicted”. “The English bwoy did a good job”.

Bob Marley is one of the seminal musical figures of the 20th century and his music will endure for years to come – well into the 21st century and beyond.

His cultural impact and his ambassadorial stature for Jamaica resonates.

Bob Marley’ message is poignant at a time when the world seems to be a more unkind place and self-destruction is more evidently apparent. Many yearn for the manifestation of the nobility of the human spirit, instead we herald the digital age, AI, materialism and ascending to the pinnacle.

Many young people today know of Bob Marley the legend; this movie attempts to show Bob Marley the man.

Jamaican audiences may be more critical of this work than international viewers who are not as au fait with Bob Marley’s back story.

The back story was well honed on Baz Luhrmann’s biopic “ Elvis”. There will be plenty of debate on whether that was the case here.

In telling a story like this one has to make an especial effort to focus on the essence of the man and separate that from the iconography.

Ah well, that’s enough of me prattling on.
