Brushing one’s teeth is something that we learn from a very tender age.

Most of us have been told by our parents, teachers and dentist that we must ensure we brush our teeth properly and at least twice a day, once we get out of bed and right before going to bed.

While most of us brush our teeth, there might be certain mistakes we make but it could be that we don’t know any better.

Here are a few common mistakes and how we can fix them.

Wrong Toothbrush

Extra-soft, soft, medium, firm – these are some of the few types of toothbrushes that people utilise. Believe it or not, firm bristles are not the most ideal type of toothbrush to use, dentists even recommend that firm bristled toothbrushes not be used as they can wear down the tooth structure and damage the gum. Instead, the soft bristled brush should be used, as this is able to bend and get under the gum to remove bacteria and loosen the plaque on your teeth. Additionally, the size of the handle and the head of the toothbrush is very important. Ensure you choose the size that suits you best.

Harder isn’t better

It is not uncommon for people to scrub their teeth while brushing. This method in actuality is not recommended as plaque is soft and loose and easy to remove. According to dentist Mark Messina from Fairview Park, Ohio, “The best way to fix this mental issue is to take away ‘scrub’ and ‘scrub brush’ and replace it with the word massage.”

Change is good!

Keeping your toothbrush longer than three to four months is not a healthy option. Once the bristles appear to succumb to some type of change it is time for a switch. Changes include bent bristles and discolouration. Keep your toothbrush in open air to prevent bacteria or mold from growing on it.

Wrong Motion

Up and down not back and forth The up and down method is the way to go when brushing. This up and down method should be done in a circular motion. Remember to think ‘massage’ not scrub.

Don’t Forget the Gum Line

The gum line is a very important part to pay of the mouth attention to when brushing. The chewing area is usually given priority, but the gum line is an area where bacteria is inclined to grow. Therefore, you should ensure the next time you brush, you get under the gum line as well – having a soft toothbrush becomes very ideal in this situation, as the gum is soft and having a hard surface clean it would damage it.

Waiting is better

Brushing your teeth immediately after a meal is not recommended. Dentists say one should wait at least 15 – 20 minutes to brush their teeth after eating. Rinsing your mouth directly after eating is a better and healthier practice as brushing aids in eroding your teeth.
