Head of the St Catherine North Division, Superintendent Hopton Nicholson, says normality has been restored to Spanish Town.

Nicholson said businesses have also re-opened in the Old Capital. This following a riot sparked by the killing of Sheldon Walters, otherwise known as Termite, an alleged leader of the One Don faction of the Klansman gang.

Walters was killed in the Top Banks community by members of the St Catherine North police on Friday, April 19.

The police have increased their presence in St Catherine capital following the killing.

“This morning we toured the Spanish Town area, we visited the men and women who have been deployed. We realise the businesses are open, we realise that the commuters are going to and from. The area is relatively normal at this time. There is nothing unusual at this time, there is nothing unusual at this time and the general Spanish Town area is safe for persons to traverse at this time,” Nicholson said.

“The heightened security forces, the presence will continue and we hope that people understand that security forces are on the ground to maintain law and order and we will continue for as long as it requires us to be here and we are just imploring persons to cooperate with us. We want to remind persons that Spanish Town is open for business and it is safe to traverse at this time,” he added.

A 24-hour curfew was imposed in sections of St Catherine, including Top Banks, Oxford Road, and Spanish Town, over the weekend.

The curfew began at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 20 and will remain in effect until 6 p.m. on Monday, April 22.
