Algerian boxer Imane Khelif says she would take a sex test if it meant she could fight for gold at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The 2024 Paris Olympic women’s welterweight champion has faced ongoing scrutiny over her gender eligibility, including a 2023 disqualification from the World Championships alongside Taiwanese fighter Lin Yu-ting by the International Boxing Association (IBA).

Khelif was cleared to compete in Paris by the International Olympic Committee after the IBA lost its recognition in mid-2023. Speaking publicly, she insisted she has “nothing to hide” and would follow any IOC testing rules.

Controversy has followed her beyond the ring. US President Donald Trump labelled her a “male boxer” after issuing an order barring transgender women from competing in female sports categories.

Meanwhile, the newly recognised World Boxing Federation introduced mandatory genetic testing to determine athletes’ sex at birth, citing Khelif in their announcement before issuing an apology. She has appealed the policy to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, with a hearing still pending.
