A player in Jamaica’s squad that is participating in the CONCACAF Gold Cup competition, tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19) on Tuesday (July 13) during routine tests for the tournament.

The player’s identity has not been disclosed to protect his privacy, but it is understood that he played in Jamaica’s 2-0 victory over Suriname.

Our Today was informed that the player is asymptomatic at this time, however, he is expected to miss Jamaica’s two other Group C encounters.

The Reggae Boyz are scheduled to play Guadeloupe on Friday, with the final group match slated for next Tuesday against Costa Rica. All the Reggae Boyz group matches are being played at the Explora Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

Reggae Boyz management has taken measures to stem the spread of the virus in the Jamaican delegation at the tournament, with the player who tested positive placed into isolation.

Tests were conducted on Thursday in keeping with the tournament regiment for testing the entire delegation a day before each match.

The tournament is being played under strict protocols, although both officials and players are not being placed in a bubble, like other international tournaments around the world. There have been other positive coronavirus tests for other teams in the competition.
