Throughout the month of February, health experts are placing the spotlight on heart health.

This includes increasing awareness of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease and steps individuals can take to reduce their risk.

This period is being observed as Heart Month.

The food we consume plays a vital role in our health. There are some foods that can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease while promoting heart health.

Leafy green vegetables

Some green leafy vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, spinach and others contain essential vitamins that helps to promote good cardiovascular health.

Research has shown that a daily consumption of a cup of green leafy vegetables that are rich in nitrates is associated with improved heart health.

Avocado

Avocado, more commonly known in Jamaica as pear, is widely known for its health benefits because it contains healthy fat, fiber and nutrients that reduce the risk of heart disease.

According to the Journal of the American Heart Association, higher avocado intake was associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular and coronary heart disease. It also found that the replacement of certain fat-containing foods with avocado could lead to lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

Whole grains

Eating whole grains can also help to lower your risk of heart disease, as they can help to reduce cholesterol and assist with weight management.

Switching out refined grains in your diet for whole grains such as brown rice, whole grain bread, oats and whole-wheat flour will be the best choice you make to improve your heart health.

Berries

Berries not only taste good but they also provide great nutritional benefits. They are packed with fibre, vitamin C and antioxidants that help to reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Fatty fish

Eating fatty fish that are packed with omega-3 such as salmon, herring and sardines is good for heart health. Studies have shown that omega-3 can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Beans

The regular consumption of beans can help reduce the risk of developing heart disease.

Beans are a good source of protein, fibre, iron and vitamins that offer several health benefits, including improving heart health.
