We are officially in the month of love! a time when many individuals express affection from the heart to their significant others.

February is a special month, not only because it celebrates the beauty of love and all it brings, but is also observed as Heart Month.

Heart Month is a time geared towards encouraging Jamaicans to adopt healthy lifestyles to prevent cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease refers to several diseases affecting the heart and blood vessels such as coronary heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, congenital heart disease and others.

According to the Heart Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ), cardiovascular disease accounts for four of the five leading causes of death. Thirty per cent of all non-communicable deaths in Jamaica are caused by cardiovascular disease.

Some of the known risk factors of cardiovascular disease include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, family history, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, diet and gender.

While individuals may not be able to change their gender and genetics, there are some small steps we can all take to reduce the risk of heart disease.

Remember, a healthy heart equals a happier you!
