
Carl Sharpe was elected unopposed as the new president of the Jamaica Triathlon Association (JTA) during its annual general meeting (AGM) held on Saturday (October 30), at Altamont Court Hotel in St Andrew.
Sharpe is the national coach for Jamaica’s junior triathletes and the father of renowned triathlete Llori Sharpe. He replaces Alan Beckford who served as interim president for three months.
Sharpe’s new executive comprises first vice-president Wayne Long, second vice-president Dayne Wright and third vice-president Lesli Prendergast. Natasha Cameron was elected secretary-general while Hanique Cheverria is the assistant secretary-general.
Carola Russell is the treasurer with Igol Allen serving as assistant treasurer.
Six directors were also elected to serve on the board and they include Donna-Kaye Sharpe, Carol Long, Franz McKnight, Dennis May, O’Neil Ebanks and Andrea Williamson.
Sharpe’s vision for developing the sport of triathlon in Jamaica includes creating triathlon clubs in partnership with local triathlon events partners, hosting more regional championships and developing a program for junior athletes to transition to elite.
In addition, he and his board plan to create road map for Jamaica to qualify for major championships and games including the 2023 Pan Am Games, the 2024 Olympic Games and the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Meanwhile, the new executive will have to hit the ground running as the JTA National Championships is set to be held Saturday November 20, 2021 in Port Royal.
The championship includes a Sprint Triathlon, Super Sprint Triathlon, Aquathlon and Duathlon which are open to all age groups as results from races are to be used to qualify for international and regional triathlon events.
