Chris Gayle lost another T20 record on Sunday (October 3) when Pakistan’s Babar Azam became the fastest batsman to score 7,000 runs in the shortest format of the game.

Azam surpassed Gayle’s record when he scored 59 from 49 balls for Central Punjab against Southern Punjab in Pakistan’s National T20 league. It was doubly sweet for Babar, as in addition to the comprehensive victory by seven wickets, he also walked away with a personal milestone as he reached 7,000 runs from 187 innings.

Gayle achieved his 7,000 runs from 192 innings.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli is third in the list, having reached seven thousand T20 runs in 212 innings.

Babar Azam scored an unbeaten 59 runs while playing for Central Punjab in the most recent match. He led his team to victory by seven wickets against Southern Punjab.

So far in the competition, Babar, who toured the Caribbean with Pakistan in the summer, has scored 286 runs in six matches at an average of 71.50. He has one century and two fifties so far in the competition.

Gayle lost his record for most sixes in a season in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) to Evin Lewis. The self-proclaimed ‘Universe Boss’ had hit 37 sixes in 13 innings during the 2016 competition when he played for the Jamaica Tallawahs.

Lewis smashed 38 sixes from just 11 innings for champions St Kitts and Nevis Patriots during the 2021 season that concluded in September.
