Despite suffering an embarrassing 0-7 pounding from England Lionesses on Sunday, Reggae Girlz coach Hugh Busby saw enough positives to remain optimistic about Jamaica’s World Cup campaign.

Jamaica, coming off a 0-4 defeat to the United States of America on June 3, turned in another clinker with no shots on goal, just 19 per cent possession and completed just 177 passes.

The English had 33 shots and 17 on target from 81 per cent possession and strung together a massive 779 passes in a total dominant display.

Ella Toore (10, 45+4), Lucy Bronze (32), Georgia Stanway (59), Alessia Russo (71), Aggie Beever-Jones (85) and Beth Mead (90+6) destroyed Jamaica at the King Power Stadium in Leicester.

“Overall, I think outside of the result, there are some positives to take away. Another valuable lesson for the players coming through,” said Busby.

“I think performance-wise, there are still areas as far as our defensive mindset as it pertains to second balls. That’s one of the things that we discussed, in our box,” he added. “We talked about the ability for us to win contact and win the second balls. I think we did a good job winning the first balls, but not a great job winning the second ones,” Busby pointed out

He continued: “Against a top-four-ranked team in the world, obviously, you get punished for those things. As mentioned, I think the positives are that we’ve got a lot of young players getting valuable minutes. Another strong performance by Leah Brooks in goal, and then just a lot of players who are stepping up and staking a claim to be in the squad.”

The Reggae Girlz were without their inspirational leader Khadija Shaw and several other senior players in Drew Spence, Taylor Hinds, Donesha Blackwood and Rebecca Spencer. But it was a strong enough squad that was exposed by a quality English team heading into the Euros as one of the favourites.

“But overall, just really pleased with a lot of the players, and I think it’s towards the end, we can kind of tell with one team was getting ready to finish off their sort of season and one team is obviously off to the Euros,” said Busby. So, the last 20 to 25 minutes were difficult. But again, proud of the players for continuing to finish off the game to the best of their ability.

The coach then suggested that his players need a break, as some of them will obviously start again in two to three weeks and that most of the group will be heading back to school.

“So it kind of shows just how young this group is in this match,” he reiterated. “As far as we as a staff, we’ll kind of reevaluate, continue to look at the areas to improve and look to get ready for the matches in October, where we hope to have a full allotment or selection of players, available for the qualifiers.”
