England forward Mason Greenwood has a chance to revive his international career, as Jamaica’s football head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson has indicated his interest in having him join the Reggae Boyz squad.
Greenwood, who has only one cap with the England national side back in 2020, has very little chance returning to the team given his troubles with his club side, Manchester United and was the subject of rape allegations, which were eventually dismissed in February this year.
The forward, who is currently on loan at Getafe and is getting some game time at the Spanish club, is being eyed by Hallgrimsson to join the Jamaican national team. He is eligible to switch allegiances in the future, potentially, as his outing with the England national team came before a rule change from FIFA, which would have made him ineligible.
Hallgrimsson, who was asked about Greenwood, who is eligible to represent the Caribbean nation through his parents told Our Today, “I’m not different from all coaches in the world. We would like to have the best talent on our team. If he gets his former fitness and former levels, then for sure he would have that level to help Jamaica.”
Greenwood and Manchester United decided in August this year that it would be best for the footballer to continue his career elsewhere. The 22-year-old forward was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 and was facing allegations of attempted rape, assault and coercive control.
However, in February the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed that all charges against Greenwood had been dropped, with the player always denying the allegations and proclaiming his innocence. A lengthy internal investigation was conducted by Manchester United and it was determined that it would be better for Greenwood to continue his career elsewhere.
Since moving to Getafe on loan on deadline day, the forward has made four appearances – with one assist and is yet to score for his new club. In all, he has played over 170 minutes for the club.
