Alarm bells are ringing at Tottenham Hotspur, with questions asked of its Head Coach, the Italian Roberto De Zerbi.

Every week he comes before the press to explain a loss and says the team needs a better mentality and has to improve.

After spending close to 350 million pounds on new players this season, a return needs to materialise pretty quickly. Tottenham has begun this season not scoring a goal in its opening four games of the season and are languishing at the bottom end of the table again.

Tottenham’s home record has been dismal It has recorded 5 wins in 36 games at home and has yet to register a Premier League win at home for 2026. It lost again at home today, this time to Aston Villa. To beat the north London side, teams only need to face them at their home ground to guarantee a victory.

Aston Villa has not made a good start to the season either but registered their first win in the EPL at Tottenham. 

Coached by Unai Emery, Aston Villa had the better of Tottenham with goals from Johan Manzambi, Nicholas Jackson and Emiliano Buendia giving them a 3-0 lead up to the 86th minute.

Then Conor Gallagher got a late goal, with Jan Paul Van Hecke getting another one for Tottenham with a header just before the final whistle.

The score flattered Tottenham. Defensively, they were terrible, and Villa’s second goal from Jackson should have been better defended. 

Kudus scored, which gave Tottenham a glimmer of hope in the first half only for the goal to be disallowed with Andy Robertson deemed offside. 

Tottenham has no cutting edge, and it is obvious the team misses Kane and Son. Solanke is turning out to be a disappointment and can’t seem to bag more than 6  EPL goals a season. He has only scored 23 goals in all competitions since joining Tottenham Hotspur. 

Over the last three seasons, Tottenham has proven to be a team with no spirit, no drive or will to fight back. It is now without a win in its last 48 games when conceding the first goal.

After the match against Aston Villa, Roberto De Zerbi said: “ I’ve never seen a team like us. So fragile, so inconsistent. You’re good, or you’re bad. You can’t be very good for the first 30-40 minutes and then concede like this.

“ We can’t concede that second goal. We can’t lose balance. The way we conceded the second goal was incredible. Today I am very disappointed, very sad, very frustrated by our performance.”

It’s beginning to look like Tottenham overpaid for many of those new players. Five games in and Tottenham continue to look flaky. Roberto de Zerbi cannot get a tune out of this team yet.
