Legendary voice actor Peter Cullen, whose unmistakable voice brought Optimus Prime to life for generations of Transformers fans, has died at the age of 85.

Cullen reportedly died peacefully at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday, August 27th, surrounded by his family. His cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

The Canadian-born actor became the voice behind Optimus Prime in the original Transformers animated television series during the 1980s. Decades later, he returned to the character for Michael Bay’s blockbuster Transformers films, introducing his iconic portrayal of the Autobot leader to an entirely new generation.

But Cullen’s voice acting career stretched far beyond Transformers. His credits included Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh, Monterey Jack in Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers, KARR in Knight Rider and the Predator in the 1987 film Predator. He also voiced Mario in the 1980s animated Donkey Kong series.
