West Indies’ ICC T20 World Cup campaign ended in ignominy Saturday morning (November 6) following a lop-sided eight-wicket loss to Australia with 22 balls to spare in Abu Dhabi. In a bid to win a third ICC T20 World title, the West Indies campaign ended in flames with their fourth loss in five matches.

“Overall it’s been a disappointing campaign. In terms of the batting we have not done well at all. Our bowling has been decent but not good enough,” Captain Kieron Pollard reflected afterwards.

“It’s the end of a generation, we have some guys who have done good things for T20 cricket in our team and around the world. We as people are very proud. We have to look at the way we play T20 cricket. What we’ve seen is that one guy in the top four has to bat as long as possible. Going forward need to do that better. We have to start from a foundation now.”

The realisation of what needed to change came too late for Pollard, who was the top scorer for the West Indies against Australia on Saturday.

Sent in to bat, the 2016 champions scored 157-7 from their 20 overs. Pollard scored 44 to prop up the batting that had slumped to 91-5 in the 13th over, having lost the wickets of Evin Lewis for 29, Gayle for 15, Nicholas Pooran for four and Roston Chase for a duck with only 70 runs on the board.

Shimron Hetmyer, following up on his unbeaten 81 against Sri Lanka on Thursday made 27 before he became the third of Josh Hazelwood’s four scalps and the fifth wicket to fall. The tall Aussie pacer had earlier removed Pooran and Chase to leave the West Indies tottering at 35-3 in the fourth over.

Dwayne Bravo, playing in his last international match, was dismissed for 10 by Hazelwood, who finished with figures of 4-39.

Andre Russell smashed two sixes off Mitchell Starc as the West Indies took 14 from the final over. The Jamaican finished on 18 not out but the West Indies’ total was never going to be enough.

And so it proved as David Warner scored an unbeaten 89 and Mitchell Marsh 53 as Australia raced to 161-2 in 16.2 overs.

Akeal Hosein 1-29 and Chris Gayle, in what is likely his final match in West Indies colours, took 1-7 as the West Indies campaign ended in a whimper.
